East 29th Avenue reopens; Commerce Drive connector is next

The city aims to finish all of its Waterway East improvements before the end of the year.

Gulf Shores reopened East 29th Avenue after crews finished asphalt work tied to an intersection upgrade, part of the city's Waterway East improvements. Work now moves to the Commerce Drive connection, and the city's goal is to have all of Waterway East, including the connector, finished and open before the end of the year.

Getting to the island: a southbound-only bridge in Gulf Shores opened in mid-May 2026, and the southern end of the Foley Beach Express near The Wharf is now northbound-only, according to the tourism bureau. Southbound drivers use the new bridge and a roundabout to reach Canal Road.
