Old T-shirts become toys for rescue dogs

Two Orange Beach High School juniors started Tees to Tugs, turning donated T-shirts into handmade tug toys for Angie's Dog House, a Foley rescue. The first event was Oct. 3 at The Wharf.

Shrimp Festival volunteers gave every tip away: $28,000 to 25 nonprofits

Concession volunteers have turned their tip jars over to local nonprofits for about 20 years; in 2025 that came to more than $28,000 for 25 groups. This year's festival was later canceled because of Isaias.

39th Alabama Coastal Cleanup, with free boat shuttles to the islands

Alabama's largest annual volunteer event ran Sept. 19, 8 a.m. to noon, with seven Orange Beach-area check-in sites and free boat shuttles from Boggy Point to isolated shorelines.

Portia Hollis, recognized by Gulf Shores and Orange Beach for organizing Healthcare Appreciation Week and twice a winner of the AmeriCorps Presidential Volunteer Service Award, received the top award in the program's sixth year.
