Baldwin County opens shelters Thursday and Friday; schools and county offices close Friday

A pet-friendly shelter opens at the Baldwin County Coliseum in Robertsdale on Thursday afternoon, and a community shelter opens in Foley on Friday morning.

Baldwin County declared a local state of emergency Wednesday. The county shelter at the Baldwin County Coliseum, 19477 Fairground Road in Robertsdale, opens at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, with a pet-friendly shelter at the same location. Bring bedding, medications, personal hygiene items and ID, plus food and medicine for pets. Officials estimated capacity at about 300 people and said more locations could open if needed.

St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 506 N. Pine St. in Foley, opens as a community shelter at 6 a.m. Friday, Oct. 9, through local Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster partners. Meals are provided; bring bedding, supplies and medications. Information: 251-256-8202.

BRATS, the county's transit system, will take residents to shelters while roads are safe (251-972-6817). The county call center is 251-972-6807.

All Baldwin County government facilities and Baldwin County Public Schools are closed Friday, Oct. 9, and weekend school activities are canceled or rescheduled, NBC 15 reported.
